This online Social Action Network is open to anyone interested in social justice. It will focus on Human trafficking - a theme chosen by the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales for 2025
The purpose of this event is to bring together all the work that is going on across the archdiocese. Speakers include: Miriam Cakebread from Santa Marta.
The Santa Marta Group is an alliance of international police chiefs and bishops from around the world working together with civil society in a process endorsed by Pope Francis who called it "an open wound on the body of contemporary society", to eradicate human trafficking and modern day slavery. How will it run?
The session will start with a 10 minute "headline" introduction from people involved followed by breakout rooms to discuss the issue and make connections.
Speakers include:
Miriam Cakebread, Policy and Network Officer, Santa Marta Group
There is more slavery today than ever before in recorded history. The Santa Marta Group looks to make a real, lasting difference. Acting as a catalyst in the anti-trafficking space, we connect leaders of faith, law enforcement, government and civil society to reprioritise the fight against trafficking. We aim to equip activists to be local leaders in this movement, raising awareness and holding elected representatives to account on their promises to protect neighbourhoods. I look forward to exploring together the options for action: how can we help those affected, and what can we do to resist the systems that normalise exploitation?
Pauline, from Medaille Trust will talk on what happens after people break out of the enslavement/trafficking. This will have a particular focus on Merseyside.
