Priority One
Government Procurement and Business Culture
Changing the culture so governments and businesses ensure all procurement and supply chains are slave-free.
The Santa Marta Group will work to encourage governments and businesses to act proactively to prevent human trafficking and modern slavery in their purchasing, selling, procurement and all elements of their business and financial activities.
To do this, the Santa Marta Group will:
- Work with G20 Governments in implementing commitments made in the G20 Leaders’ Declaration.
- Establish a network of diverse business leaders and international law firms so ethical leadership becomes the norm and creates ’good business’ through legislation and policy that prevents human trafficking and modern slavery and allows victims to access a range of remedies, including reparations and compensation.
- Work with partners (including the EU, the UN, ILO and other multilateral bodies) to influence the most effective models to provide workers with proper pay, rights and equality at work.
- Inform communities of the measures required of governments and businesses to prevent human trafficking and modern slavery.
- Encourage communities to act as a catalyst for change.
How will we know if it is working:
- Leaders in business and government would change their practices to ensure that employment, purchasing and investment decisions respect human dignity and do not fund human trafficking and modern slavery.
- Existing legislation would be enforced and where necessary new legislation introduced to prevent and sanction financial benefits of human trafficking and modern slavery effectively.
- Tax-payers’ money would not be used to fund organised crime of human trafficking, with governments able to demonstrate probity.
- Communities would become the catalyst for change locally, influencing leaders in politics, police, local government, faith and business.
- Moral leadership, going beyond the legal minimum, would be recognised as intrinsic to ending modern slavery.
